01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Strolling along the approach to Shibamata Taishakuten temple, the fragrant scent of frying oil drifting from storefronts naturally brings footsteps to a halt. Tendon at Yamatoya is defined by crisp batter lightly scented with sesame oil and coated in a bold, dark, sweet-savory tare. The sauce seeps generously into the tempura coating and the steamed white rice below, delivering a straightforward, nostalgic Tokyo shitamachi flavor from the first mouthful.

The menu is deliberately concise, revolving around two main tendon choices: "Nami" (regular) and "Jo" (special). Those wanting a combination of prawn and white fish tend to select Nami, while diners seeking two large prawn tempura opt for Jo. Portions of rice are served moderately, making it comfortable to clear the bowl and still leave room for grazing on sweets along the temple approach.

Ordering piping-hot oden alongside bottled beer or sake makes for another classic way to linger here. The shop is also known for fragrant mugwort kusa dango, served as an accompaniment inside or packed into boxes of coarse or smooth sweet red bean paste to take home. Yamatoya does not take advance reservations and accepts cash only, so having bills on hand makes dropping in between temple visits effortless.
